Let Food Be Thy Medicine …

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food ~ Hippocrates

Hi guys, I hope you are all keeping well on this lovely Friday. As some of you are aware, I transitioned to a plant based diet very recently. It has been two months since I made the change.  I went vegetarian last Summer and at the same time I cut right back on dairy.  Two months ago I decided to completely cut out dairy and eggs and I haven’t looked back since. It has been the best decision I have ever made.

I made the decision to go vegan for ethical reasons. The meat and dairy industry is the main contributor to green house gases and I no longer wanted to contribute to either the cruelty that is involved in farming or the effects that farming is having on our planet. The following documentaries explain the above in more detail : Earthlings, Vegucated and Cowspiracy.  They really opened my eyes.

Besides the animals and the environment, the third reason I decided to become vegan was for my health. I don’t think I have shared this with you guys before but four years ago I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition.  It is a connective tissue disorder characterised by inflammation/ pain of the muscles and joints.

Today I had my bi-annual check-up with my rheumatologist and it went really well.  My blood results were the best they had ever been.  My ESR (inflammation marker in the body) was the lowest it had been since my diagnosis which suggests that cutting out animal proteins has had a calming effect on my body.  All my other results were perfect and even my B12 was great. My B12 levels are actually on the high side so I have plenty of reserves there.

So all in all, I am really happy after seeing my consultant and she is happy for me to reduce my meds under her supervision.  I informed her of my decision to move to a plant based diet and how I feel confident I can eventually come off my meds and manage my condition through food, and she is open to this and actually said she is curious to see my results come February.  So happy days, I feel like celebrating !!!

I really do feel that when it comes to health, it is so important to take responsibility for your own body.  Do your own research and take a holistic approach.  Its not all about popping pills.  Diet, exercise and stress management are so often overlooked in favour of whipping out that prescription pad.

Always conduct your own research and don’t become redundant in the management of your own health.  For evidence based research on healing the body through food I found the following resources really enlightening; the documentary Forks Over Knives is absolutely life changing. Also if you like a good book,  The China Study makes for an excellent, highly absorbing read. Have a great weekend everyone xx

I just want to say congratulations, Nicola! This is amazing news and I’m so happy about your results. You are strong! And I’m happy to call you my friend because you’re an inspiration! Most importantly, I love your reasons for going vegan. There are so many people who do it without proper reason or just because it’s a fad and they tend to give it a bad name. So, I’m extremely happy for you and your decision to do this and I can’t wait to hear how your results continue to improve. ^.^
